What is the working principle of a vertical injection molding machine?

Yo, what’s up everyone! As a supplier of vertical injection molding machines, I get asked a ton about how these bad boys actually work. So, I figured I’d break it down for you in this blog post. Vertical Injection Molding Machine

Let’s start with the basics. A vertical injection molding machine is a type of manufacturing equipment used to make plastic parts. It’s called "vertical" because the clamping unit and the injection unit are arranged vertically, one on top of the other. This setup has some really cool advantages, like being more compact and easier to integrate with automation systems.

Alright, now let’s dive into the working principle. There are basically four main stages in the injection molding process: clamping, injection, cooling, and ejection.

Clamping

The first stage is clamping. Before we can start making any parts, we need to make sure the mold is properly closed and held tight. The clamping unit of the vertical injection molding machine does this job. It consists of a fixed platen, a moving platen, and a clamping mechanism.

The mold is mounted between the fixed and moving platens. When we start the machine, the hydraulic system or electric motor in the clamping mechanism drives the moving platen towards the fixed platen. As the two platens come together, they close the mold. Once the mold is closed, the clamping mechanism applies a huge amount of pressure to keep the mold shut during the injection process. This pressure is super important because it prevents the plastic from leaking out of the mold when it’s injected.

Injection

Once the mold is securely clamped, it’s time for the injection stage. This is where the magic really happens. The injection unit of the vertical injection molding machine is responsible for melting the plastic pellets and injecting the molten plastic into the mold cavity.

The injection unit is made up of a hopper, a screw, a heating barrel, and a nozzle. First, we pour the plastic pellets into the hopper. The pellets then fall into the heating barrel, which is equipped with electric heaters. These heaters heat up the barrel to the right temperature, depending on the type of plastic we’re using.

As the barrel heats up, the screw inside it starts to rotate. The rotating screw does two things. First, it moves the plastic pellets forward towards the nozzle. Second, it helps to melt the plastic by creating friction. The combination of heat from the heaters and friction from the screw turns the solid plastic pellets into a molten, gooey substance.

When the right amount of molten plastic has accumulated at the front of the screw, the screw stops rotating and starts to move forward like a piston. This forward movement forces the molten plastic out through the nozzle and into the mold cavity. The pressure applied during this injection process is really high, making sure the plastic fills every nook and cranny of the mold.

Cooling

After the mold is filled with molten plastic, we need to let it cool down. This is the cooling stage. During cooling, the plastic inside the mold solidifies and takes the shape of the mold cavity.

The cooling process is usually done with the help of cooling channels that are built into the mold. Coolant, like water or oil, circulates through these channels, absorbing the heat from the plastic. The rate of cooling is really crucial. If the plastic cools too quickly, it can cause internal stresses and defects in the part. On the other hand, if it cools too slowly, it can increase the cycle time and reduce the productivity of the machine.

Ejection

Once the plastic has solidified and cooled down enough, it’s time to take the finished part out of the mold. This is the ejection stage. The ejection system in the vertical injection molding machine is designed to do just that.

When the cooling is complete, the clamping mechanism releases the pressure and the moving platen moves back, opening the mold. Then, the ejection pins or plates inside the mold push the finished part out of the mold cavity. The part then falls or is removed from the machine, and the whole process is ready to start again for the next part.

Now, let me tell you a bit about why our vertical injection molding machines are so great. We’ve put a lot of thought and effort into making our machines reliable, efficient, and easy to use.

Our machines are built with high – quality materials, so they can withstand the rigors of continuous operation. They also come with advanced control systems that allow you to precisely control the temperature, pressure, and injection speed. This means you can make high – quality plastic parts with consistent dimensions and good surface finish.

Another thing is that our vertical injection molding machines are very energy – efficient. We use the latest technology to reduce energy consumption, which can save you a lot of money in the long run. And if you’re looking to automate your production line, our machines are easy to integrate with robots and other automation equipment.

So, if you’re in the market for a vertical injection molding machine, whether you’re a small business just starting out or a big manufacturer looking to upgrade your equipment, we’ve got you covered. We offer a wide range of machines with different capacities and features to meet your specific needs.
